Subd. 6. Bicycle equipment requirements:

(a) A bicycle shall not be operated at nighttime unless it is equipped with:

  • A lamp emitting a white light visible from a distance of at least 500 ft to the front
  • A red reflector, approved by the Department of Public Safety, visible from all distances between 100 and 600 feet to the rear when in front of lawful lower beams of motor vehicle headlamps.

(b) A bicycle shall not be operated when there is not sufficient light to clearly see people and vehicles on the highway at a distance of 500 feet unless it is equipped with reflective surfaces that are visible from 600 ft when viewed in front of lawful lower beams of headlamps on a motor vehicle. Reflective surfaces must include materials on each side of each pedal, a minimum of 20 square inches of reflective material on each side of the bicycle or its operator, and meet regulations for new bicycles from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.

(c) A bicycle may have a front lamp emitting a white flashing signal, a rear lamp emitting a red flashing signal, or both.
